1541 AD 5301 AM EMERALD TABLET
The Tabula Smaragdina, or Emerald Tablet, as printed in De Alchemia, an anthology of alchemical texts Johannes Petreius published at Nuremberg in 1541. This edition's Latin "vulgate" text of the Emerald Tablet became the standard version read by early modern alchemists, Isaac Newton among them, who made his own English translation from it. The archive's illustrations pair this genuine 1541 printing with cover art from The Emerald Tablets of Thoth the Atlantean, a wholly unrelated 20th-century esoteric text by the American occultist Doreal; the two share only a name.
