9600 BC TURKEY GOBEKLI TEPE

Monumental T-shaped limestone pillars, some carved with animal relief, raised in circular enclosures on a hilltop in upper Mesopotamia. Radiocarbon dating places the earliest exposed structures between roughly 9500 and 9000 BC, at the end of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A, centuries before pottery, writing or the wheel and well before agriculture was established in the region.
