1665 AD ROBERT HOOKE MICROGRAPHIA ON SNOWFLAKES

1665 AD ROBERT HOOKE MICROGRAPHIA ON SNOWFLAKES

Robert Hooke's engraving of snow crystals from Micrographia, printed at London in 1665, the first major published work of observations made through a microscope. Hooke noted that whenever the crystals took a regular form, they always branched into six principal arms, among the earliest scientific descriptions of snowflake symmetry to appear alongside Kepler's 1611 pamphlet and Descartes's 1637 account.
