1799 AD INDIA BARDO THODOL
A page from a manuscript copy of the Bardo Thodol, the "Liberation Through Hearing During the Intermediate State," better known in the West as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Tibetan tradition holds the text was composed by Padmasambhava in the 8th century and hidden as a terma, a concealed treasure-teaching, before its rediscovery by the treasure-revealer Karma Lingpa in the 14th century; modern scholarship dates the text as it survives to composite authorship across the 14th and 15th centuries. This card could not confirm a findspot or present holding institution for the specific manuscript leaf pictured, dated 1799 in the archive.
