1619 AD GERMANY JOHANNES KEPLER HARMONICES MUNDI

1619 AD GERMANY JOHANNES KEPLER HARMONICES MUNDI

A geometric plate from Johannes Kepler's Harmonices Mundi, printed at Linz in 1619 and considered by Kepler his greatest work. Building on the polyhedral planetary model of his earlier Mysterium Cosmographicum, Kepler here derived the Platonic solids from their constituent triangles in the manner of Plato's Timaeus and argued that planetary motion encoded the same numerical ratios as musical harmony, a discovery he folded into what is now called Kepler's third law of planetary motion.
