1657 AD ENGLAND ROBERT TURNER ARS NOTORIA

The title page of Ars Notoria: The Notory Art of Solomon, Robert Turner's 1657 London translation of a medieval grimoire attributed to Solomon, printed by F. Cottrel and sold by Martha Harrison near St Paul's. Turner worked from a Latin edition Cornelius Agrippa had printed roughly fifty years earlier, itself drawing on manuscript versions circulating since at least the 13th century; the text presents itself as a method for gaining mastery of the seven liberal arts through angelic prayer and contemplation of mystical diagrams called Notes.
