1588 AD GERMANY HIERONYMUS REUSNER

A woodcut from Pandora, das ist die edelste Gab Gottes, the alchemical anthology physician Hieronymus Reusner compiled under the pen name Epimetheus, first printed at Basel in 1582 and reissued in an expanded 1588 edition with 42 colour woodcuts. Its eighteen-image sequence is counted among the earliest alchemical picture cycles meant to encode an actual sequence of chemical operations rather than illustrate a text.
