1618 AD GERMANY JOHANN DANIEL MYLIAS

The "Alchemical World Landscape," engraved by Matthaeus Merian for the Basilica Philosophica, the third of three treatises bound together in Johann Daniel Mylius's Opus Medico-Chymicum, printed at Frankfurt by Lucas Jennis in 1618. A radiant emblem bearing the Tetragrammaton floats above a landscape where allegorical figures labelled Phoenix and Aquila flank the tree of life, one of the most frequently reproduced images in the alchemical print tradition.
