1927 AD EVANS WENTZ BOOK OF DEAD

1927 AD EVANS WENTZ BOOK OF DEAD

The gilt-stamped green cloth cover of The Tibetan Book of the Dead, the first English translation of the Bardo Thodol, published by Oxford University Press in London in 1927 under the name of the American-born scholar Walter Evans-Wentz. The demanding work of translating the Tibetan text was actually done by the Sikkimese scholar Kazi Dawa-Samdup, who died in 1922 having finished only the funerary section; Evans-Wentz completed and framed the rest, and the book's title, cover swastika motif and Western-facing packaging are largely his editorial choices rather than the original Tibetan tradition's own.
