1948 AD ISRAEL ZIONIST FLAG

1948 AD ISRAEL ZIONIST FLAG

The flag of Israel, a Star of David between two horizontal blue stripes on white, echoing the stripes of the tallit, the Jewish prayer shawl. The design traces back at least to 1885, when Israel Belkind and Fanny Meirovitch raised a similar banner at the settlement of Rishon LeZion, and was popularised at the First Zionist Congress in Basel in 1897, when David Wolffsohn is said to have held up his own tallit as a ready-made national flag. After consultation with Diaspora Jewish communities, Israel's Provisional Council formally adopted this design as the state flag on 28 October 1948, the year the archive's filename gives it.
