Magazine (Online)

Local community dialog, carried on the screen rather than the page.

D5 Magazine Online: a collage of the work in this chapter

Online community of neighbors, friends, and people voicing opinions, sharing lifestyle, product and service experiences.

Local

Members exhibit unique personalities or traits, and express their own attitudes and beliefs. User profiles support an ability for neighbors to seek, find, learn, share, exchange, qualify, comprehend, and post their own self-directed, editorial and subjective judgement.

Community

Individual members belong to groups and publish shared stories of common characteristic or interest, perceived as distinct from their larger society.

Dialog

Journaled communication, limited and/or openly public forums become preferred venues for selected participants to form, maintain, and express similar ideas, interests and passions. Publication can be one to one, one to many, many to one, and many to many.

LocallyGrownNews.com

"LocallyGrownNews.com has a saying: 'Bloom Where You're Planted.' It's not just a slogan - it's a way of life. The site is a hypertopical, hyperlocal online community of people passionate about local food policy and living sustainably. LocallyGrownNews.com provides a platform for others to share their stories and photos of living locally. I earned my doctorate in Texts and Technology and my career has been about bringing people together through words and technologies. As a columnist, online community developer and college professor, I nationally advocate for journalism entrepreneurship and hyperlocal journalism. The use of photography in these settings, as with the Barton James images portrayed here, lends an authenticity and immediacy to the visual that links the narrative more intimately to the viewer or reader on a cultural level."
