1625 AD GERMANY THREE SISTERS OF ALCHEMY

1625 AD GERMANY THREE SISTERS OF ALCHEMY

The frontispiece of Musaeum Hermeticum, first published in German at Frankfurt in 1625: three haloed women seated beneath trees, each holding a disc marked with an alchemical symbol, salt, sulphur and a hexagram representing the union of the two, while more figures gather around a well in a cave below. The image, generally attributed to Matthaeus Merian's workshop, was carried forward into the better-known 1678 Latin edition, Musaeum Hermeticum Reformatum et Amplificatum.
