1854 AD FRANCE ELIAS LEVI DOGMA

1854 AD FRANCE ELIAS LEVI DOGMA

The frontispiece and title page of Eliphas Levi's Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie, showing his own emblem of the hermetic axiom "as above, so below" traced through a reflected bearded figure holding crossed sun and moon staffs above a hexagram. Levi's Dogme, the first of the work's two volumes, was first published in Paris in 1854, with the companion Rituel following in 1856; the copy pictured here, reading "Deuxieme edition tres augmentee" ("second edition, greatly enlarged") and dated 1861 on its own title page, is that later, expanded second edition of the first volume rather than the 1854 original the archive's filename year points to.
